Universal Sea Project

This series of illustrations was created for Gwen van den Bout – a Dutch artist currently based in London. She came up with a conceptual installation for the Universal Sea Project competition to be showcased all around Europe. My brief was to give her project rationale a bit more character by making sure the graphics and the installation complement each other. The illustrations represent something between floating debris, sea animals and plastic, all of which can be found in our seas and oceans. The enigmatic shapes stimulate one’s imagination by leaving space for interpretation and hint at the nature of the installation. The typographic layout refers back to the idea of water and flow, and the separation of the paragraphs and their alternate messy ragged alignment highlights the concept of floating debris. Below you can see the final illustrations (last two) and the work in progress explorations.
